Install the starter board level at the bottom with the groove pointing down and the tongue pointing up toward the ceiling.

Angle your finish nailer at 45 degrees directly into the corner where the tongue meets the shoulder, driving through drywall into studs.

Slide the groove of the next board over the nailed tongue. Use a sacrificial wooden tapping block to tap the joint tight without denting the tongue.

What is the main difference between tongue & groove and shiplap? +

Tongue and groove (T&G) boards have a protruding ridge (tongue) on one edge that fits into a matching channel (groove) on the adjacent board, locking the boards together on both front and back faces. Shiplap boards have overlapping rabbet notches cut on opposing faces, which overlap but do not physically interlock.

How do you blind-nail tongue and groove boards? +

Position your 16-gauge pneumatic finish nail gun at a 45-degree angle directly into the inside pocket where the tongue meets the board shoulder. Driving nails through this shoulder locks the board to the framing stud while the groove of the next course completely hides the nail head.

Is tongue and groove better than shiplap for ceilings and porches? +

Yes. Because tongue and groove boards physically interlock top and bottom, they resist wind uplift on outdoor porches and prevent board sagging on overhead ceilings significantly better than overlapping shiplap.

How much expansion gap should I leave for tongue and groove walls? +

Leave a 1/4-inch to 1/2-inch expansion gap around the entire perimeter (floor, ceiling, and inside corners). Wood naturally expands across its grain with seasonal humidity; covering perimeter gaps with baseboards and crown molding allows the wood to move freely without buckling.
