🌧️ Building Code Tip (IRC R703.1):

Always install horizontal siding bottom-to-top with overlapping bevels to shed driving rain naturally.

Building Science & Code

Rainscreen Drainage Cavity: Why Airflow Matters

Exterior wood siding expands and contracts with humidity. Trapping water behind siding causes wood rot, peeling paint, and structural wall failure. A properly engineered rainscreen prevents 99% of siding defects.

1

Weather-Resistive Barrier (WRB)

Install breathable house wrap (Tyvek, HydroGap) shingle-lapped with 6-inch horizontal and 12-inch vertical overlaps, sealed with acrylic seam tape.

2

1×3 Vertical Furring Grid

Fasten vertical 1×3 pressure-treated or cedar furring strips directly over each framing stud (16" O.C.) to create a continuous 0.75-inch drainage and airflow channel.

3

Bottom Pest Screen & Top Vent

Install Cor-A-Vent or stainless steel insect mesh along the bottom edge and under eaves to allow convective drying while blocking wasp and rodent entry.

Frequently Asked Questions

Exterior Siding & Weatherproofing FAQs

Can standard interior shiplap be used for exterior siding? +

No. Interior shiplap (especially MDF or standard untreated pine) will rot, swell, and delaminate within months when exposed to weather. Exterior siding requires rot-resistant wood species (Western Red Cedar, Cypress), pressure-treated lumber, or 100% cellular PVC with specialized beveled laps designed to shed water outward.

Do I need a rainscreen ventilation gap behind exterior shiplap? +

Yes. Under International Residential Code (IRC Section R703), installing exterior wood or composite siding over a ventilated rainscreen cavity (using vertical 1x3 furring strips or a 3D drainage mat) allows trapped moisture to drain and air to circulate behind the siding, preventing mold, rot, and paint failure.

What nails should be used for outdoor shiplap siding? +

Always use Grade 304 or Grade 316 Stainless Steel ring-shank siding nails (2.5 inches length). Electro-galvanized finish nails will rust and react with the natural tannins in cedar or cypress, creating permanent black vertical rust streaks down your siding.

How much overlap is required on exterior shiplap boards? +

Exterior shiplap requires a minimum 0.5-inch rabbet overlap. In high-wind or coastal zones, 0.75-inch rabbet overlaps or specialized drop-siding profiles with 45-degree water-shedding bevels are recommended.

How often does exterior cedar shiplap need to be resealed? +

Exterior cedar sealed with clear UV-inhibiting water repellent should be recoated every 2–3 years. Semi-transparent stains last 4–6 years, while high-grade 100% acrylic latex paint over oil-based primer lasts 10–15 years.
