Board & Batten Calculator
Calculate symmetrical batten spacing, strip counts, top cap ledges, and bottom baseboards for modern farmhouse accent walls and dining room wainscoting.
1. Wall Dimensions & Batten Spacing
B&B MathDivided into 9 equal symmetrical wall panels.
Start by installing the left and right corner battens first, then divide the remaining clear span equally to eliminate narrow end slivers.
The Symmetrical Batten Spacing Formula
Never space battens with a fixed tape measure measurement from left to right, or you will end up with an awkward, narrow 4-inch sliver at the far right corner.
1. Calculate Number of Wall Bays
Convert total wall width to inches and divide by target spacing (e.g. 16 inches). Round to the nearest whole number:
2. Determine Exact Center-to-Center
Divide the wall width in inches by the number of bays to find the exact on-center mark:
3. Total Battens Needed
Add 1 to the number of bays (representing both left and right corner battens plus all interior dividers):
Board & Batten Layout FAQs
What is the standard spacing for board and batten walls? +
The standard spacing for interior board and batten walls is between 12 and 16 inches on center (O.C.). For large or high-ceiling rooms (9ft–12ft), wider 18-to-24-inch spacing is commonly used to create bold, modern architectural panels.
How do you calculate equal spacing for battens on a wall? +
To calculate equal symmetrical spacing: 1) Convert total wall width to inches. 2) Divide by your target spacing (e.g. 16 inches) and round to the nearest whole integer to find the number of wall bays. 3) Divide total wall width by the number of bays to get the exact on-center spacing. 4) Add 1 to the number of bays to get the total number of vertical battens.
Do I need backing boards behind battens or can I nail directly to drywall? +
For interior residential accent walls, the vast majority of homeowners and contractors install battens (1x2, 1x3, or 1x4 MDF/pine) directly over painted drywall using construction adhesive and finish nails. Full wood backing boards (1x10 or 1x12 planks) are only required for exterior siding or authentic historic restoration projects.
What height should board and batten wainscoting be? +
Traditional interior design follows the "rule of thirds": for an 8-foot ceiling, wainscoting looks best at either 1/3 height (approx. 32–36 inches) or 2/3 height (approx. 60–66 inches). Full-wall floor-to-ceiling board and batten is also extremely popular in modern farmhouses and entryways.
