Pneumatic finish nail takeoffs, recommended nail gauges (16ga vs 18ga vs 15ga), stud penetration depth analysis, and construction adhesive tube requirements.
1. Framing & Fastener Parameters
AWCI CompliantIncludes 2 nails per stud crossing + 10% spare nail buffer.
16-gauge 2.0" finish nails provide superior holding power against wood cupping compared to thin 18-gauge brad nails.
Nail Gun Gauge Comparison: 16-Ga vs. 18-Ga vs. 15-Ga
Selecting the right pneumatic nail gun gauge is crucial to guarantee holding power without splitting wood edges.
18-Gauge Brad Nails
Thin 1.0mm wire diameter creates tiny, barely visible nail holes.
• Best for: 1/4" thin MDF & decorative trim
• Holding Power: Low (Must use glue)
16-Gauge Finish Nails
1.29mm rectangular wire provides superior shear strength to resist wood cupping.
• Best for: Standard 1x6 & 1x8 solid pine shiplap
• Holding Power: High (Code standard)
15-Gauge Angled Nails
1.8mm heavy round shank with full nail heads for maximum tensile withdrawal load.
• Best for: Ceilings, soffits, and 2x thick boards
• Holding Power: Maximum
Fastener & Hardware FAQs
What size nails should I use for shiplap? +
For standard 1/2-inch or 5/8-inch shiplap installed over 1/2-inch drywall, finish carpenters recommend 2.0-inch 16-gauge finish nails. For ceiling installations, 2.5-inch 15-gauge or 16-gauge nails are required to ensure a minimum of 1.25 inches of solid wood penetration into framing joists.
Can I use an 18-gauge brad nailer for shiplap? +
An 18-gauge brad nailer is suitable only for lightweight 1/4-inch MDF panels or when combined heavily with construction adhesive. For real solid pine, cedar, or 3/4-inch shiplap, 18-gauge brads lack the shear holding power to prevent natural wood cupping and warping over time.
How many nails do you put in each shiplap board? +
Drive two (2) nails at every framing stud crossing (spaced 16 or 24 inches apart). For 1x6 and 1x8 boards, drive one nail 1 inch from the top edge and one nail 1 inch from the bottom edge into each stud.
How much construction adhesive do I need for shiplap? +
A standard 10-ounce cartridge of heavy-duty construction adhesive provides approximately 30 square feet of coverage when applied in continuous serpentine (S-shaped) beads across the back of the planks.
